Vallejo Community Gather For Cafe Fire Victims
Benicia, CA (PRWeb) January 18, 2007 -- When the Good Day Cafe in Vallejo suffered $2 million in fire damage Jan. 8, it left more than hundreds of devoted customers without their favorite breakfast hang-out.
Some 18 employees plus owner Cindy Balesini were left out in the cold. And one familiar face -- long-time community theater actor and director Harry Diavatis -- wasn't about to stand by.
Diavatis and the community has rallied around the cafe with a fund-raiser SUNDAY, FEB. 18, AT THE ELKS LODGE at 2850 Redwood Parkway in Vallejo.
The 5 pm to 9 pm event includes a spaghetti feed, silent and live auction and live music and entertainment from a variety of area musicians including Guy Arrostuto and Bob Simmons.
"We're trying to help these people get back on their feet," Diavatis said. "And so far the support has been overwhelming."
Diavatis, 62, ate breakfast at the Good Day every day for five or six years, he said, until moving from Benicia to Green Valley three years ago. He would still dine at the Good Day Cafe two or three times a week.
"They're like family and the least we can do is help out employees who no longer have a paycheck," Diavatis said.
The fire started when a stove ignited to go containers, according to the Vallejo Fire Department. It is unknown when the cafe will re-open at its current site, which is attached to the Quality Inn, or relocate.
Tickets for the benefit are $20 each or a table of eight for $150 and may be purchased through Diavatis at (707) 333-5793.
Event organizers are soliciting a variety of items for the silent and live auction. Businesses or individual wishing to donate items for the auction may do so by contacting Diavatis.
