How to Bargain in China

When travelling to China there will be many beautiful things to purchase, but the price is usually rather high unless you bargain with the shopkeeper. In fact bargaining is an art and quite expected.

With determination and patience you can cut down the asking price to at least half, but always remain calm and polite, which is expected. Be sure you don't allow the trader to see how much you want or like the goods you are interested in. Instead, you need to point out the flaws - nothing is perfect, after all. This will give a reason for the trader to lower the price without losing face.

Always compare the prices and quality of goods before you decide what to buy. When the trader sees that you seem quite likely to buy elsewhere, he will be more eager to lower his price. If he doesn't, shrug and pretend to walk away. This will usually elicit the response you want.

Keep your larger notes separate from the small change and pay with the small change so that the trader cannot see how much money you have. If he sees you've a lot in your wallet, he will be less likely to lower his price.

Wearing plain clothes so you don't look like a rich person and speaking a few phrases of Chinese will also help.
