Community Exchange and Pierre Omidyar

As stated in the previous article, successful people draw on the specifics of their life journey, unique talents, the resources at hand, their unique personality and body type, and the specifics of their cultural milieu as grist for the mill  all in service to their inspired vision and purpose.

They are in the world, but not of it. They have a sense of proportion and know what this world can and cannot provide.

It is truly amazing to notice that the more someone becomes truly "themselves", IE, in tune with "themselves", the more they embrace their own unique purpose; yet, at the same time, the more they embody fundamental universal qualities shared by many great men and women throughout history.

Here are more commonalities I have observed in many finanacially successful people. They tend to

be students of history (without getting stuck in it) be comfortable entertaining various points of view be committed to doing what works see success as a journey pay attention to and trust their intuition have mentors have students inspire others view failure as feedback instead of a final verdict have a loyal and committed staff enjoy being alone have a very clear vision of their future learn from their past take a keen interest in life make peace with what is"

These points being mentioned, I give you:

Iranian-born Pierre Omidyar is probably best known for starting EBay, the online auction site that has taken community exchange to a whole new meaning and level.

You may not know that Pierre is a major philanthropist, focusing much of his efforts on empowering exisiting organizations that already are aligned with his view of service and contribution. He seems particularly interested in supporting the efforts of micro-lenders who make small loans available to third-world individuals to start their own small businesses so they can break the vicious cycle of poverty and make a contribution at the same time.

My sense of Pierre is that he is a master at the right use of structure. He seems to be keen aware that structures are a tool for channeling energy and can be used to bring out the best in people and communities.

I see him as a modern-day Cyber Buckminster Fuller!

From reading about his life, as well as a complete transcript of a college commencement address he gave, here are some highlights:

Pay close attention to your inner and outer world. Awareness in primary There is a basic goodness in people. Look for it; design systems that bring out the best in people and foster a community ethic of goodness, honesty, service, and citizenship Know Unity & Appreciate the diverse and unique expressions of that Unity Dont overplan! Connect with the Love & Discover your purpose & Live with passion.

Pierre teaches us the joy of honoring Life and the Living through joy and respect for what structure can do  and what it cant.
