The US-China Clean Energy Forum offers the prospect of improving the world's energy situation and increasing cooperation and understanding between the two countries. Together, the US and China account for nearly half the energy consumed in the world. Energy affects economies globally, as well as the environment and the health of our people. As the world's largest petroleum importers, the two countries have a common interest in working together to secure future energy supplies. The technologies exist to improve efficiency, reduce greenhouse gases and diversify supplies. Both nations will create enormous economic opportunities by investing in smart energy technologies and clean energy sources. Recognizing the importance of this issue, leaders from the US and China agreed to create high-level, private-sector-led process to address how to ramp up cooperation on clean energy.
The US-China Clean Energy Forum is being led by key executives from China and the US. The Chinese side is led by the National Development and Reform Commission's Energy Research Institute, as well as key leaders from other ministries, academia and the private sector. On the US side these leaders include Stanley Barer, chairman emeritus of Seattle shipping company Saltchuk Resources; former U.S. Trade Representative Carla Hills; John Thornton, former co president of Goldman Sachs, chairman of the Brookings Institution; Michael J. Phillips, chairman of Russell Investment Group; William E Brock, former Commerce Secretary, U.S. Trade Representative and Senator from Tennessee; Susan Tierney managing principal of the Analysis Group and chair of the Energy Foundation. Susan was formerly the Assistant Secretary of the Department of Energy; and Mickey Kantor, former U.S. commerce secretary. The US-China Clean Energy Forum is intended to produce concrete recommendations for our two governments and will develop joint projects in the most promising areas of clean energy. Only recommendations agreed to by both sides will be presented to the two governments. There will be four meetings annually for the next two years, with the first meeting in Beijing on October 20-21, 2008 and the second meeting in Seattle on January 6-7, 2009. Subsequent meetings will alternate between our two countries.

Investing In China: Chinese Banks
China?s banking sector has traditionally served as a party-controlled feeding trough for its inefficient, unprofitable state-owned enterprises (SOEs), most of which were technically insolvent. The process was simple ? extend a loan to an unqualified SOE applicant, then write off the loan as a bad debt when it failed to repay. This situation is beginning to change, and Chinese banks are attracting the attention of foreign banks that are beginning to view them as investment opportunities rather than potential competitors. Nevertheless, China?s banking industry is beset by several problems.
